Are you a podcast listener? Join a conversation featuring the hosts of three fun and engaging African inspired podcasts. Oral traditions have always been part of storytelling in African cultures, and podcasts have provided a way for Africans in the diaspora and on the continent to continue to tell their stories. Afrolit‘s Ekua Musumba, Mwende Bwino‘s Mazuba Kapambwe, and No Wahala‘s Tunde Ogundipe and Bawo Nduka will be joined in conversation with Yolanda Sangweni from Luminary Media. Each of these hosts will present a short introductory audio of their respective podcasts and talk about what inspired them to start this journey of storytelling. They will share the challenges they’ve faced as well as the successes they’ve experienced in their pursuits, and share tips for aspiring podcast creators.
EKUA MUSUMBA hails from Kenya, but identifies herself as a global citizen based on her experiences living in London, Geneva and New York. As an entrepreneur, Ekua has worked in public relations, event management and fashion. She is currently the creative curator at The Faro and her playlists can be heard when she DJs at various African inspired parties in New York City. Ekua holds a Bachelor of Arts from The New School in Culture, Media and Creative Entrepreneurship. She co-created Afrolit three years ago.
Afrolit features people of African descent who like the host are ‘Afropolitans’. On each weekly episode, Ekua Musumba speaks to a guest who shares their life experiences, and their career paths as chefs, journalists, writers, musicians and more.
MAZUBA KAPAMBWE hails from Lusaka, Zambia. She was born in Washington DC and raised on three continents, which spawned her love for travel. She is a freelance writer who has written for CNN Travel, OkayAfrica, The Culture Trip and several in-flight magazines. Mazuba is also the host of a travel web series called ‘The Fest Gurus’ that follows her and three other Africans to African festivals on the continent. She started the Mwende Bwino Podcast in January 2019 when she couldn’t find any podcasts about traveling as an African with an African passport. Mazuba has a Bachelors Degree in Africana studies from the State University of New York Albany and is currently pursuing her Masters in Africana studies at the same institution.
Mwende Bwino is a travel themed podcast that aims to inspire listeners to explore their city, country, continent and beyond. The bi-monthly podcast features guests involved in the travel and tourism industry from Africa and the diaspora.
BAWO NDUKA is a first generation Nigerian- American, born in Lagos, Nigeria and raised in the Bronx, NYC. Bawo is an entrepreneur in the entertainment field, running businesses in Public Relations, Apparel, and Catering. Bawo started his entertainment path in college, planning and hosting events for different clubs and organizations. His success with hosting and planning led to him being hired by different colleges throughout NYC. Bawo now plans concerts in New York showcasing African acts. Outside of these concerts, Bawo is known in the African community as someone who brings people together through apparel, food and entertainment.
TUNDE OGUNDIPE is a first generation Nigerian-American, born and raised in Connecticut. For the past 15 years, Tunde has worked back and forth between Los Angeles, New York and Lagos, Nigeria in various digital strategy and content roles with Apple, WME/IMG (Endeavor), McCann, Sony, Warner Music and Universal Music Group. In all roles, Tunde has focused on using content to educate and generate positive sentiment about African culture while bridging the gap between the African and Western diasporas.
No Wahala highlights topics that concern Africans outside the continent. Garners over 200,000 listeners and notable guests have included Mr Eazi, Rotimi, Adekunle Gold and more.
YOLANDA SANGWENI is a South-African born writer, editor, digital content strategist and podcast host. She most recently served as the Digital Content Director at ESSENCE where she co-created and co-hosted the Webby-nominated “Yes, Girl” podcast. She now works in programming at Luminary, a podcast subscription network and app. She’s also the founder of African Women Create, an organization dedicated to the empowerment of African women in the creative arts.
