African UN Ambassadors, the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Belgium to the UN, Brussels Airlines, and The Africa Center come together at the TWA Lounge for an evening of dialogue.

The Africa Center recently participated in an event that welcomed African UN Ambassadors to gather for an evening of dialogue, along with our friends at Brussels Airlines and The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Belgium to the United Nations.

Entitled “Promoting a New Vision for a Contemporary and Successful Africa,” the event was an opportunity to discuss how international partnerships can promote economic development in African countries.

After a warm welcome from H.E. Mr. Marc Pecsteen de Buytswerve, Permanent Representative of Belgium to the United Nations, the Ambassadors heard about the work of The Africa Center from Interim CEO Dana Reed, and enjoyed Virtual Reality tours of our building.*

Next up, Christophe Allard, Director North America, Brussels Airlines, presented his company’s work in Africa and its goal to strengthen its already deep engagement with the continent.

The Ambassadors then shared their perspectives on priorities in the aviation and wider business sectors in their countries, and gave valuable feedback on how organizations can forge productive relationships with companies, governments, and communities on the continent.

It was a wonderful evening of thoughtful dialogue, which generated a vision of the work to be done and the possibilities at stake. Key take-aways included the importance of equal partnerships, the necessity of improving intra-country flights within Africa, and the significance of New York’s diverse African communities for fostering partnerships between the US and African countries.

The event concluded with cocktails provided by the fantastic hosts at the TWA Lounge on the 86th floor of One World Trade Center.

Many thanks to all who attended, Brussels Airlines, and The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Belgium to the United Nations. We can’t wait to see how these partnerships and discussions develop!

For the Herero women of Namibia, their flamboyant dresses are symbols of cultural tradition, resilience, and pride.

This fascinating video follows a young Herero woman as she gets her first dress, and takes a look behind the scenes at Windhoek fashion...

Style Out There
In Namibia, where the average temperature in the summer is 80 degrees, Herero women deck themselves out with long sleeves and petticoats. Their gorgeous dresses, elaborate headpieces, and vibrant patterns showcase their pride in their identity, all the while alluding to the suffering they've endured within the past 100 years — including a genocide that nearly wiped them out.
