The Africa Center is proud to announce a new partnership with Salon Africana, a boutique cultural agency founded by East African jazz vocalist-writer Somi.
This partnership will begin as a quarterly live music series, also called Salon Africana. The series will kick off with a performance by acclaimed South African artists Thandiswa Mazwai and Nduduzo Makhathini as they present works from their indelible collaborative album “Belede” (2016). Thandiswa and Nduduzo will be joined by Tarus Mateen on bass and Clarence Penn on drums.
Vocalist Thandiswa Mazwai is one of the most influential South African musicians of her generation, straddling the urban and the rural, effortlessly melding the traditional with the modern. Her compositions include traditional Xhosa rhythms, mbaqanga, kwaito, and jazz.
Pianist Nduduzo Makhathini is fast becoming one of the most important jazz musicians on the African continent, playing with a bright lyricism and a full sound pallet that gives him a markedly wide melodic vocabulary. He’s a prolific songwriter, currently working on his ninth album. He has received two South Africa Music Awards for Best Jazz Album (2017 and 2018) in addition to numerous other awards and accolades.
Doors open at 7:30pm
