Actor Uzo Aduba and The Africa Center’s CEO, Uzodinma Iweala will be joined in a virtual conversation about FX on Hulu’s new series titled Mrs. America. The conversation will focus on the third episode of the series which features Aduba playing the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress, Shirley Chisholm. We encourage you to watch the episode on Hulu and send us your questions before the event.

About the Series

Mrs. America tells the story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly, aka “the sweetheart of the silent majority.” Through the eyes of the women of the era – both Schlafly and second wave feminists including Shirley Chisholm – the series explores how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the 70s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted the political landscape. Mrs. America features an all-star team in front of and behind the cameras including Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Uzo Aduba as Shirley Chisholm.

About the Speaker

Uzo Aduba stars in FX on Hulu’s miniseries MRS. AMERICA, which tells the story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and the unexpected backlash led by the conservative Phyllis Schlafly, played by Cate Blanchett. Aduba has received critical acclaim for portraying Shirley Chisholm, the first Black person elected to Congress, and also the first Black candidate ever to run for President under a national political party in 1972. The FX on Hulu series launched on April 15th. Aduba recently finished her celebrated run as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in the critically acclaimed Netflix Original Series ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK. On the big screen, Uzo was last seen in the independent drama MISS VIRGINIA. Before starring on television, Aduba made her Broadway debut in CORAM BOY in 2007 followed by the hit musical revival of GODSPELL in 2011. She discovered her talent for singing at a very early age and became a classical music major at the Boston University School of Fine Arts. Up next, Aduba will begin pre-production for AMERICANAH starring opposite Lupita Nyong’o on HBO Max. AMERICANAH is a 10-episode limited series that is based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-selling novel of the same name.
