Hank Willis Thomas: All Power to All People

At approximately 25 feet tall, All Power to All People reflects on a storied culture and history. Variations of the Afro comb or pick have been around for 6,000 years, originating in Africa before re-emerging in Britain, the Americas and the Caribbean. Around the 20th century, Afro combs started to take on distinctive cultural and political meaning. The Afro comb exists today as many things to different people: It is representative not only of an era, but a sound and a counter culture. It is a uniting motif, worn as adornment, a political emblem, and signature of collective identity. All Power To All People is presented in Harlem at The Africa Center as a symbol of community, strength, perseverance, comradeship, equal justice and belonging.
